It was ironic that I had just discovered the music of The Good Lovelies a few days before we received word that Stuart McLean had chosen them to tour with him in his most recent tour. Hearing them in person was a real treat for our audience. I hope that you'll enjoy their delightful music as much as our audience did that evening.
Who came up with the Good Lovelies name. Is there a story there?
Getting our name was a "happy accident." We were putting on a show as three solo acts back in December 2006 and we wanted to find a name for the show that wasn't already being used by other groups. Sue suggested the name "Good Lovelies" and designed a poster for the show, and Caroline and I thought it had a nice ring to it. Of course, now our name is a huge source of enjoyment to us on stage. When we're feeling particularly sassy we call ourselves the "Bad Nasties" or if we're really hungry, "The Big Lovelies."
How did it feel to quit your day jobs to do music?
It felt like the right thing to do. The decision to quit was made far easier knowing that the three of us would be doing it together. There's something comforting and encouraging about having two women you respect and admire leave a full-time, secure career with benefits because they believe in the band. So, hand in hand in hand, Sue, Caroline & I took a leap of faith, and none of us would change a thing. (Of course, I should add, before I quit my job for real, I took a leave of absence... only to quit months later for good.)
You were recently nominated for a Juno for your self-titled album and in November you were awarded the Canadian Folk Music Award for Emerging Artist of the Year - how does that feel?
Well - the truth is, it hasn't really sunk in yet. We were driving in Alberta touring with the Vinyl Café when we found out we were nominated for a Juno. We spent the next few minutes calling our parents and significant others and celebrating the nomination over coffee and oranges. It's an honour to be nominated among such a great group of Canadian artists and we are really looking forward to attending the celebration in Newfoundland. Being awarded the CFMA for New Emerging Artists was surreal.
When we heard our name called, Sue started walking up the aisle, with Caroline skipping behind her. Caroline almost tripped Sue by accident as I watched from behind them. We gave a brief and giddy speech on stage and body-slammed in celebration backstage. It was a great moment to share with my two best friends.
Very short tour anecdote that people don't already know..
Well, a few months ago, while driving up the highway from Picton, Ontario, we drove right through the end of the rainbow. No word of a lie, the rain was in front of us, the sky was ominous in front of us, and we slowed down when we spotted the end of the rainbow. A lot of strange things have happened to us on the road, but this was by far the most interesting moment in the car. I will admit, Sue was combing the ditch for an hour looking for Lucky Charms and a pot of gold.
